Matter Devices: a Plain-English Buying Checklist for a Nordic Home

"Matter-compatible" is stamped on half the smart home boxes in the shop now, and it tells you almost nothing about whether the thing will actually work in your flat. Before you buy anything with that label on it, run it through these five checks.

1. Thread or Wi-Fi – and does it matter which?
Matter devices talk over either Wi-Fi or Thread, a low-power mesh protocol. For a single lamp or plug, either is fine. For a whole system – several outlets, sensors, a hub down the line – Thread scales better and puts less strain on your router. You don't need to become an expert in either; just know that if a product only mentions Wi-Fi, it'll work, but it may not be the easiest thing to grow later.

2. Does it actually fit a Schuko socket?
This is the one Nordic and German buyers get caught out on most often. A lot of "smart home starter kits" are designed around US or UK plug shapes and arrive with an adapter that juts awkwardly out of the wall. Check the plug type before you buy, not after. Moduel's modules are built around the Schuko socket from the start – nothing bolted on, nothing that wobbles.

3. Can you set it up without a separate hub?
Older smart home systems often needed a dedicated hub sitting on a shelf somewhere, plus its own app, plus its own account. Matter was built to remove that step. A genuinely Matter-native device should pair directly with the ecosystem you already use – Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa, SmartThings – with no extra box required. If a product still insists on its own proprietary hub "for full functionality," that's a sign its Matter support is a bolt-on, not the real thing.

4. Does it work with what you already own – including IKEA ÅSKVÄDER?
A lot of Nordic homes already have IKEA's ÅSKVÄDER smart plugs and sockets installed. The good news: ÅSKVÄDER runs on the same Matter standard, so you're not starting from zero. Moduel's modules snap onto the same system and speak the same language, which means you can keep what you've already set up and simply add the outlets you're missing, rather than replacing anything. We've written a full explainer on exactly how that compatibility works, if you want the detail: https://www.moduel.com/blogs/nyheter

5. Can you add to it later without buying a whole new kit?
This is the one that saves the most money over time. Plenty of "smart home kits" are sold as a sealed set – if you want one more outlet in eighteen months, you buy an entirely new box. Moduel is built the other way round: start with one module, in one socket, and add outlet modules, USB-C modules or control modules as you need them, no new base kit required.

Where to start
If you're starting from nothing, the Smart Matter Control Module F1 (249 SEK, https://www.moduel.com/products/smart-module) is the cheapest way to get a genuinely Matter-native outlet into one socket and see how it feels before you commit to more. If you'd rather start with a full kit, the Start Kit Smart Schuko (https://www.moduel.com/products/smart-start-kit-schuko) gives you the whole system in one box – just note that white is running low, so grey or black will ship fastest right now. And if you want to go bigger from day one, the 2-output Schuko module (https://www.moduel.com/products/schuko-2-output-module) lets you run two Matter devices from a single socket without crowding your extension cord.

The short version
Matter is a genuine improvement – one standard, fewer hubs, more choice. But the label alone doesn't tell you whether a product fits a Schuko wall, works without its own hub, plays nicely with what you've already got, or lets you add just one more outlet instead of buying a whole new kit. Run any "Matter-compatible" purchase through those five checks before you buy, and you'll end up with a system that actually grows with your home instead of one you have to replace.
