Build a Smart Home in One Evening: Start With the Outlet, Not the Hub

Most guides to a smart home start the same way: buy a hub, download an app, order a bag of smart bulbs, and hope it all talks to itself. It's a lot of money and a lot of set-up before you've actually changed anything in the room you're sitting in.

There's a shorter path, and it starts somewhere you've already got: the wall socket.

Why the outlet is the right place to start

Every device in your home draws its power through a socket. Not every device has a smart bulb fitted, and not every room needs a hub sitting on a shelf — but every room already has the thing that controls whether anything in it has power at all. Start there, and the rest of the "smart home" follows naturally: you're not retrofitting intelligence onto fifteen separate gadgets, you're adding it once, at the point everything already passes through.

This is the idea behind Moduel. Instead of a single smart plug you plug a strip into, Moduel is a modular connector system: 16A, 250V, smaller than the socket it replaces, and built so you add exactly the modules your room needs — nothing you don't.

The one-evening plan

You can go from a normal wall socket to a working smart setup in three steps, in one sitting, with no electrician:

1. Click together a Simple Start Kit (399 kr). It's the cheapest way into the modular system — the base you build everything else on top of.
2. Add the Smart Matter Control Module (249 kr). This is the piece that turns a normal modular outlet into one your phone — and your voice assistant — can actually see and control.
3. Pair it. The Smart Matter Control Module works over Matter, which means it pairs directly into Apple Home, Google Home or Amazon Alexa — whichever you already use. No separate Moduel app required to get basic control working, no new ecosystem to learn.

That's it. Total cost to go from a bare socket to a smart one you can control from your phone: 648 kr.

Already have an IKEA ÅSKVÄDER setup?

If you've already bought into IKEA's ÅSKVÄDER smart home range, you don't need to start over. Moduel's modules are built to sit alongside it: the Extension Kit Schuko adds more physical outlets to the same circuit, and the Smart Matter Control Module adds the same Matter-based app control to sockets ÅSKVÄDER doesn't cover. Think of it as filling the gaps in what you've already got, not replacing it.

What it costs, and what to do tonight

Here's the full one-evening build, broken down:

- Simple Start Kit: 399 kr
- Smart Matter Control Module: 249 kr
- Total: 648 kr, plus whichever extension or outlet modules your specific room needs

If you want to go further — more outlets on the same run, or extending into a second room — the Extension Kit Schuko and the individual outlet modules clip onto the same system, so you're never buying a second, incompatible kit.

First order today gets 20% off. Start with the socket. The hub can wait.
